When pool water evaporates, the water disappears โ but most of the minerals and dissolved solids in that water remain behind.

A pool may look perfectly clear while calcium hardness, CYA, or TDS is significantly higher than it should be.
As those levels continue to increase, maintaining properly balanced water becomes more difficult.
Possible warning signs include:
- White calcium scale along the tile line
- Rough or scaled plaster
- Frequent pH adjustments
- Calcium buildup on salt cells
- Cloudy or dull-looking water
- Difficulty keeping chlorine effective
- High CYA from years of stabilized chlorine use
- Constantly increasing TDS
Why Calcium Keeps Increasing
Calcium doesn’t evaporate with your pool water.
When water evaporates during warm weather, calcium and other dissolved minerals stay in the pool. Replacement water then adds additional minerals.
Over months and years, calcium hardness can reach levels that make maintaining a properly balanced LSI (Langelier Saturation Index) increasingly difficult.
High calcium doesn’t automatically mean a pool will scale. Water balance also depends on factors such as pH, alkalinity, temperature, and other chemistry. But the higher the calcium becomes, the smaller your comfortable operating window can become.
That is one reason many San Diego pool owners eventually face a choice between draining and refilling their pool or treating the existing water.
What About High CYA?
Cyanuric acid, commonly called CYA or stabilizer, protects chlorine from ultraviolet sunlight.
But too much CYA can make chlorine management more difficult because higher stabilizer levels require correspondingly higher free-chlorine levels to maintain effective sanitation.
Pools that have relied heavily on stabilized chlorine products such as tablets can gradually accumulate CYA.
And just like calcium, there isn’t a simple chemical you can add that makes a large amount of CYA disappear.
Reverse osmosis provides another option by physically removing CYA along with many other dissolved substances from the water.
What Is TDS in Pool Water?
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids.
It is a measurement of the dissolved material present in your pool water. That can include minerals, salts, chemical byproducts, and other dissolved substances.
TDS naturally increases over time as water evaporates and pool chemicals and replacement water are added.
Saltwater pools naturally have much higher TDS readings because salt itself is part of the TDS measurement. That’s why TDS should always be interpreted in the context of whether the pool is a traditional chlorine pool or a saltwater pool.
Why Fall Is a Great Time to Check Your Pool Water
By September and October, your pool has just experienced some of the highest evaporation and swimming demand of the year.
That makes fall a logical time to test the water and see what accumulated during summer.
Instead of carrying elevated calcium, CYA, or TDS into another year, reverse osmosis can give the water a fresh starting point before the next swimming season.

Traditionally, the solution for excessive calcium, CYA, salt, or dissolved solids has been to drain some or all of the swimming pool and replace the water.
